  • solidarity with the victims of the tsunami of December 26, 2004 in Puducherry (ex Pondichery),

Pondicherry Solidarity

Many of you have responded to our call, and thanks to your generosity, SPIA and FNAME have raised almost 15,000 € in donations and grants. We thank you very much.

Following the evaluation mission carried out by our agent, we have established a partnership with a local association established for almost 15 years in Pondicherry «SINDANAI SIRPI SINGARAVELAR SOCIAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION» Whose work is to provide schooling for the tsunami orphans. The funds raised by AISP/SPIA will be used to purchase land and build a building to house the association, which will allow it to spend its rent on children’s education. The AISP/SPIA wishes to extend this collaboration and continue to help orphans beyond a one-off operation.

Our expert, Mr. Aroumougam Segar, is currently in Pondicherry to hand over the cheques allowing the purchase of the land to the joint names of AISP/SPIA and SINDANAI SIRPI SINGARAVELAR SOCIAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION, after all the checks of use. Mr. Aroumougam Segar will collect all the administrative and legal documents necessary for this purchase and construction of the building. We will keep you informed of the developments of this project on this site.

He must also meet with the local authorities and the French consular authorities that support this project.

The delivery of mandate letters and cheques to Mr. Aroumougam Segar took place on November 29 at the headquarters of AISP/SPIA in the presence of representatives of the Tamil community of Rhône Alpes, Mr. Anthuvan and Sancarcoumar.

Solidarity Iran

A violent earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred on Friday, 26 December 2003 at 2:58 CEST in Iran in the city of Bam, 1000 km south of Tehran. Some 20,000 Iranians were killed in the worst disaster in this region since 1988. The historic quarter of the medieval city of Bam has been completely destroyed.

After lengthy negotiations, IAPH was able to set up a project for the construction of a health centre in the Bam region. The Rhône-Alpes Regional Council and the General Council of the Rhone have participated in this project by granting us grants. The estimates for the construction of the clinic have arrived and the actual construction should begin within a few weeks.

Solidarity Cambodia

In 1996, AISP/SPIA funded and assisted in the construction of an additional building at a school in the Svray Rieng region of Cambodia. This structure, although mainly built of wood, has concrete foundations and a tiled roof. Over the past 10 years, however, the structure has suffered from the weather and needs a major renovation to avoid becoming unsafe and unusable.

An AISP/SPIA-DH team visited the site in August 2005 to assess the damage and propose solutions. Following this trip, 3 distinct objectives emerged:

The renovation of the existing structure
The construction of a new building in solid form after the demolition of a wooden building that has become unusable
Provision of school supplies.
In addition, a playground could be built on the school grounds.

AISP/SPIA-DH has decided to get involved in this project and carry it out.

Project

On 12 November, the AISP/SPIA met with His Excellency the Ambassador of Cambodia to France, who provided support for the project.
